Please follow these instructions for best results.
Notify your provider with any changes to your health history or medications (antibiotics, vitamins, supplement, etc) since your last appointment.
No prolonged sun exposure to your face 24 hours prior to your treatment. A treatment will not be administered on your sunburned skin. No tanning products including spray tan and tanning lotion should have been applied in the last 2 weeks.
Avoid any irritants to your skin, such as products containing retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, or astringents, for at least 12 hours prior to your treatment.
If an active or extreme acne breakout occurs before treatment, please consult your provider.
What Can Be Expected
**It is important to note that healing time can vary between clients. The following represents the general recovery phases you may expect. Individual clients may experience variations from this course.
What to Expect the Day of Treatment and During Your Healing Process
Please do not wear makeup on the day of treatment on the area being treated.
Day 1: You will look as though you have a moderate to severe sunburn and your skin will feel hot and tighter than usual. This is normal and will subside after 1 – 3 hours.
Your skin will be swollen and sensitive to the touch.
Two post treatment mask options:
CO2 Mask is a wonderful in patient option that will hydrate your skin and aid in your recovery process. It is applied in the office, left in place for 1 hour, and then removed.
SkinCeuticals Bio Cell Mask is a great post procedure addition to help replenish the hydration of your skin. The mask should be done day of treatment and can be left on the skin for up to one hour (can purchase and be done at home). If the mask dries to the skin, simply dampen the mask to remove.
Avene Cicalfate, SPF, and Avene Thermal Spring Spray will be applied to your skin prior to leaving the office.
Avene Cicalfate should be purchased from Aesthetics By Eileen to not only help heal the skin but will also help to minimize the risk of infection.
Avene Thermal Spring Spray can be used throughout the healing process to hydrate the skin and improve irritation.
Day 2-4: you may notice your skin is mildly red, swollen, itchy, and dry. It may be starting to develop a sand paper like texture. These are the microscopic treatment zones in which the laser entered your skin. They are like very tiny scabs. Like a scab, they need to remain intact to the skin until completely healed. They will start to come off on their own in the next few days. These treatment zones may cause the skin to appear darker, this is normal. Do not encourage these to come off as this can lead to scaring and infection.
Day 4-7: Swelling, redness, and the sand paper feeling should begin to improve as your skin continues to heal. Your body will continue producing collagen and elastin for the next 6 months.
Step by Step Aftercare Instructions
A wet wash cloth and a zip lock baggy of ice or frozen peas makes a great cold compress that can be applied to the skin for 20 minutes at a time. Applying hourly with help greatly with swelling the following days to come. To minimize swelling, keep your head elevated throughout the night.
Night 1 after treatment: If SPF was applied to your skin, you may gently cleanse with Elta MD Foaming Cleanser. Apply Cicalfate 20 minutes before bed.
Day 2: AM: Cleanse skin, using tepid water, with Elta MD Cleanser. For full absorption, apply Cicalfate 20 minutes before applying SPF 30 or higher. If no plans to leave the house, no SPF is necessary. Swelling is normal. Apply Cicalfate and Avene Thermal Spring Spray as often as you would like throughout the day to moisten the skin. The more you apply, the better your skin will heal.
Day 2: PM: Cleanse with Elta MD Cleanser. Apply a generous amount of Cicalfate 20 minutes before bed. Follow these instructions days 2-7.
Day 4-7: begin using Vitamin C in the AM. Vitamin C will help to protect the new skin that comes through during your healing process. Any of the Vitamin C purchased in our office can be used. You may also begin to exfoliate. The best method for exfoliation is to stand under running water in the shower and use your finger tips to gently massage the skin. A great exfoliant is the Aesthetics By Eileen Clarifying Brightening Polish.
If necessary, you may apply makeup to the treated area, using clean brushes after 48 hours. We prefer you refrain from using makeup until your skin is completely healed.
What to Avoid After Your Treatment
Any products that have been open for more than 6 months should not be used on the treated area(s).
Avoid sun exposure and use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen of at least 30 SPF to prevent further sun damage.
Avoid heat (hot tubs, saunas, etc.) for 7 days.
Avoid exercise for 7 days or while your skin continues to heal. Sweating and gym environments are harmful, rampant with bacteria, and may cause adverse reactions.
Avoid swimming 7 days while you skin is healing. Bacteria can enter into the newly created channels in your skin and cause an infection.
Do not use any other skin care products for 7 days post treatment.
Multiple treatments may be required for optimal benefits and results. Discuss with your provider.
Notify us of any concerns (blistering, excessive or increasing redness/swelling after the first 24-72 hours, etc).
